As traditional tourist destinations become more and more crowded, many travelers are seeking destinations further from the beaten track. Palestine was the fastest growing tourist destination in the world in 2017 with Iran and Jordan also experiencing rapid growth. Tourism to eastern Europe is growing faster than tourism to western Europe – even Europe’s ‘last dictatorship’ of Belarus has started offering visa free travel! Even within traditional tourist destinations, places slightly off the beaten track are becoming more popular whether that is Belfast in the UK or Sevilla in Spain. Chernobyl has become one of Ukraine’s most popular tourist destinations sustaining many tour companies.
Travelers are also increasingly looking for experiences. While extreme sports holidays and safaris are still growing in popularity, tourists are also in search of more novel experiences. Tourists increasingly want a truly unique experience. Food related tourism – cooking classes and tours of street food – is surging in popularity with a 57% increase in bookings in 2017. People increasingly want to experience the local history as told to them by locals – historic walking tour bookings increased by 125%.
Even in conventional tourist destinations, people are seeking new experiences. The USA’s most popular tourist activity with foreign visitors (according to Trip Advisor) is no longer a trip up the Empire State Building but a Chicago architectural tour by boat.Travelers want something different.
Our aim is to provide both a new destination and a new experience for travelers. Whichever location we ultimately select, it will be off the beaten track and far from overrun with other guests. The experience of becoming the ruler of your own country for the duration of your stay is not something offered by anyone else.
